<P>Premiership giants Manchester United have confirmed they have received a preliminary approach for a takeover from an unnamed suitor.
The Red Devils have decided to announce the news following recent speculation that American sports tycoon Malcolm Glazer was ready to increase his stake in the club.
Glazer, who owns NFL franchise Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is currently the club's second largest shareholder with a 19.2 percent stake while John Magnier and JP McManus are the largest shareholders with a 28.9 percent stake.
"The board of Manchester United plc notes the recent press speculation," read a club statement to the London Stock Exchange.
"It confirms that it has received a preliminary approach regarding a possible offer for the company. This approach contains a number of significant conditions.
"The company is seeking clarification of this proposal and, at this stage, it is unclear whether any offer will be made.
"The board will make a further announcement if appropriate."
