His debut for Panionios included two assists, as Ewald Lienen’s side ran out 2-1 one winners over Aris at the Nea Smyrni and in only his second Greek Super League match, Alvaro Recoba inspired the Kyanerythri to a stunning 5-2 victory over high-flying Ergotelis with a classy double. However, after starring in Crete, the Uruguay star played down his individual performance and focused his entire team’s efforts.

Speaking to Greek newspaper Exedra, the former Inter Milan spoke about his weekend exploits in the context of his team’s performance.

“I’m really happy, not just because of my first goal but because the team won at a difficult ground and played good football.” Recoba said.

“I knew that our opposition were undefeated, which makes our victory even more significant.”

Recoba arrived as a late summer transfer along with international teammate Fabian Estoyanoff, who also had a starring role on Sunday, producing no less than four assists for his side.
