Mourinho: 'This is my Inter' Saturday 29 August, 2009
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jose Mourinho smiles as his Wesley Sneijder gamble paid off and notes “this is the way my Inter has to play.”
The 4-0 triumph over Milan has temporarily put them top of the table and dealt a massive psychological blow to their critics.
“The game changed because Inter are different from last season. Both teams played with the ball to feet and gave the initiative to the other side, as both are strong on the counter. We scored the first goal and from then on it was one-way traffic, there was simply no match.
“We played with a completely different philosophy to last season and in a way I'd never seen Inter play. I like to win, but I also like to play good football and this team can achieve that. We played badly last week, it's difficult to tell in this sport and you never know what will happen tomorrow.
“The characteristics of these players means we have got to play ball to feet. I won't say we exactly worked out the first goal in training, but the concept of having the striker and midfielders pushing forward to combine is something we did study.
“Now there is the first Champions League game against Barcelona and we can get a picture of what we can do in that competition.”
Sneijder was not originally in the squad as his international transfer only came through late last night, but he was thrown straight in at the deep end.
“Sneijder is a talented player and I knew it was a risk, that if we lost with him playing then I would be called a disaster and insulted by the critics.
“He did very well, so did the team and he unites the midfield with attack. This is why today I am a fantastic Coach and last week I was dreadful,” joked Jose.
“I knew for the last 24 hours that Sneijder would play, ever since [director Marco] Branca told me he was available.”
There were fears over how the Nerazzurri would do without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but they have fundamentally changed approach.
“We have more potential in this side, even without a decisive player like Ibrahimovic. We have the five players we always needed and the team is more balanced. We need work to gel with so many new faces, but obviously beating our local rivals is a great psychological boost.
“[Diego] Milito gives a fantastic 'out' for players in possession and always provides a point of reference. He played for the team today and his movement was wonderful. We have two great strikers and Mario [Balotelli] can learn a lot from them to become very important for Inter.”
Milan had started the better team and only crumbled after the opening half-hour. What went wrong for Inter at that time.
“I didn't like that when we got the ball back in midfield, Milan would immediately put pressure on and we were slow getting out of that. When we started using [Dejan] Stankovic and Sneijder to do that.”
Mourinho also had some advice for Milan boss Leonardo, who emerges from his debut derby with a 4-0 defeat.
“Leonardo will no doubt be criticised this week, but the only advice I can give is that I always slept the same way after a win, defeat or draw. He needs to do the same, trust himself and realise life continues tomorrow.
“I won't be celebrating, no, I'm going to eat something and sleep, then go home to Portugal.” |
