NBA总裁大卫-斯特恩1996年10月29日于纽约举行的一次新闻午餐会上公布了NBA历史上的五十巨星名单。午餐会在Grand Hyatt饭店举行，该饭店的前身是考莫多尔饭店，正是在该饭店，1946年6月6日签定了起初的NBA宪章。选举委员会在选举五十巨星时不考虑球员在场上的位置，也不对五十巨星进行排序，而且退役球员不能选自己。
