MILAN - Massimo Moratti gave the following interview to SkyItalia and local TV station Telelombardia after this morning's work at the Saras offices in Milan's city centre:

Italy won the World Cup in Germany with two absolute protagonists in Marco Materazzi and Fabio Grosso. Is there a bit of Inter on the cup?
"I'm very pleased because they are good and serious lads and are full of character. We all know Materazzi, and we are lucky to have managed to get Grosso. He's a nice lad with great character, spirit of sacrifice and ability. From the coach down to the last man in the squad, Italy were a great group. They all did well with renewed spirit and they achieved a wonderful triumph. It's not nice to single out individual players."

Marco Materazzi was involved in a nasty incident with Zidane. What did you think about it, and have you spoken to the player?
"No, I have not spoken with the player yet, but we are all keen to know what happened. But it has happened, even though this bad episode is attributed to Zidane. It is a pity because Zidane is a superb player, certainly the best inside forward in European football history. It is a pity he did this at the end, but I don't think this cancels out his spectacular career in any way at all."

This world title could be good for Italian football...
"It is certainly a negative moment but this could be the right medicine to start again. It has done the whole country good, happiness is always a good thing. And it is especially good for football because we can identify ourselves with this positive aspect and start again. Not necessarily from scratch, but by using everything that is good for the fans to build for the future."

As long as being World Cup winners does not become synonymous with a 'footballing amnesty'...
"Each person has his own opinion. The important thing is that we don't interfere with the work of others. I think the men there looking at this thing are competent enough to give the right reply and get football back on track."

Did you see any interesting players at the World Cup?
"It is too easy to say Messi and Tevez... We already knew almost all of them, so there weren't any big surprises. I saw Grosso and he looked good..." (Moratti smiles)

Messi is practically unreachable. But maybe Tevez...
"Both of them are unreachable."

Inter seem to be pushing for Luca Toni but there is competition from Real Madrid. Are there negotiations in progress?
"Yes, but nothing is impossible. This is the basic rule."

So in theory he could join Inter?
"We will see. We will see..."
