(SPORTS- SOCCER) LOCAL:
European clubs chase Awako
Rwanda 2009, which is the 16th Edition of CAF’s U–20 Championships, described the performance of Black Satellites as a clear indication of unveiling greater talents that abound on the soils Ghana.
High-Flying and skillful midfielder, Gladson Awako is overwhelmed by his performance at the just ended African Youth under 20 Championship in Kigali, Rwanda.
The Heart of Lions’ playmaker, Gladson Awako, who featured in all five matches for Ghana stands out as a distinctive revelation of the tournament.
He was very instrumental in Ghana quest to rule Africa at the Youth Level.
The 19 year old silky midfielder was an Integral member of Black Satellites who won Ghana’s third U-20 trophy on the continent.
He had made this confession in an interview that it was really a good opportunity for him.
“Oyibo” as he is affectionately called, started his football career at Obuasi with Ajax Academy about three years ago.
He later played for miracle FC at Adjingano, Legon and has now settled with Kpando Heart of Lions.
He said he was astonished when he first had the invitation to join the Satellites for the African Youth Championship qualifiers last year because the team was mainly made up of players from the 2007 Starlets’ squad who knew themselves and did not know where he will fit.
“I then decided to work and break into the first set of the team. It was difficult though, I had to die for it”. The light-skinned player said.
“When I had my first opportunity I was tensed up but gathered momentum gradually to impress my leaders”, he said.
“Another great opportunity was given to me at the WAFU Tournament in December last year in Nigeria and God was wonderful to me”.
“After the WAFU Tournament, I said to myself, I will use the African Cup as a spring board to reach higher heights in the game”. He relished.
“In Kigali, it was always my prayer that God should grant us a world cup ticket even if we don’t lift the cup at stake”. He confessed.
When 90 MINUTES tried to find out his greatest challenge during the tournament and he had this to say.
“It was the match against Mali. We were all tensed because if we lost that match, it meant that our hopes of playing on the world’s stage would be in shambles.” He answered.
He continued, “Apparently that was the match I scored the first goal for Ghana. So my greatest challenge then became my joyous moment. What a day in my football career.”
“At the moment, I am with my club (Heart of Lions), preparing for their CAF Champions League 2nd leg with Etoile Filante on Sunday at the Ohene-Djan Sports Stadium. We want to prove our worth on the African scene, God is our strength”.
“Lots of Clubs from Europe, mainly Spain, Italy, Holland and Germany have shown up but I’m happy and busy with Heart of Lions and I have to fight for a position. I know God’s time is the best”.
“I would be ungrateful if I fail to show my heart-felt appreciation to my fans for their unflinching support. I promise I won’t let them down. He concluded. |
